Putnam hires Sager for currency desk

Michael John Sager has been named as portfolio manager and head of quantitative research in the currency group at Putnam Investments.

Mr Sager will lead Putnam's currency research effort, oversee portfolio construction in key currency products and work to build Putnam's external client base.

“Michael's research and technical expertise in the currency management field will advance the work of the currency investment team,” said Dirk Morris, managing director, director of currency and Australasian business.

He joins Putnam from JPMorgan Fleming Asset Management of London, where he was head of FX research.

Previously, he served as international economist for JPMorgan Investment Management and as a economist at the Bank of England.

Muller ups sticks for Gartmore posting

Gartmore Asset Management has lured Reinhard Muller away from Deutsche Asset Management to be its managing director, head of institutional and intermediary business.

Mr Muller, who joined on April 1, will be responsible for the mutual funds business in Switzerland, Austria, Germany and all institutional business.

He will be based in the Zurich office, reporting to Graham Wainer, head of clients and portfolio management.

Mr Wainer said: “He is highly experienced in the international institutional markets and will undoubtedly be a valued addition to the team.”

Mr Muller joins GAM from Deutsche, where he was a director responsible for institutional sales activities in Switzerland. Prior to this, he worked for Morgan Stanley in London as an investment advisor for private wealth management.

NTGI gets new head of global equities

Northern Trust Global Investments has taken on Stephen Dowds as head of international equities.

Based in London, Mr Dowds will oversee the firm’s development of its non-US active equities business, which comprises over $1bn in funds under management.

He joins NGTI from Dryden Capital Management, a division of Prudential-Bache International, where he was managing director and chief investment officer.

Mr Dowds will report to Barry Sagraves, chief executive of NGTI’s European business, and to Orie Dudley, NGTI’s global chief investment officer.

Mr Sagraves said: “Stephen’s 20 years’ experiene in managing both European and global portfolios will enable him to contribute immediately to the ongoing success of our existing European and EAFE mandates, while preparing a strategy for launching a global active product.”

Tettenborn recruited by SG for pensions

SG Asset Management UK has hired Richard Tettenborn as a special adviser for the development of its pension fund business with local authorities.

He replaces Richard Cockroft who has relinquished his role to take up a position in South Africa. Mr Tettenborn was the county treasurer of Staffordshire County Council and is a past president of CIPFA and the Society of County Treasurers.
