Ms Biggs will also assume responsibility as general manager of Northern Trust’s London branch.
She will have responsibility for all strategic, tactical, business development, marketing and relationship management activities undertaken by the bank’s corporate and institutional services business unit in the region.
Prior to taking on this role, Penelope Biggs headed up Northern Trust’s international sales and global fund services teams in London and was responsible for sales, marketing and internally managed clients.
Northern Trust has also appointed Sally-Anne Callick as vice-president of UK business development for Northern Trust’s institutional custody and asset servicing business. She will report to Ms Biggs.
Prior to joining Northern Trust, Ms Callick was a relationship manager to UK pension funds and asset managers at JPMorgan Investor Services.
Sharma moves to Philippe from MLIM
Gariesh Sharma has joined the European smaller companies portfolio management team of Philippe Investment Management in Paris.
He was appointed as associate portfolio manager and analyst for Europe small/mid cap portfolios. Reporting to director Consuelo Brooke, he will work on the research and management of specialist portfolios investing in smaller European companies.
Mr Sharma has seven years experience at Merrill Lynch Investment Managers, five of which were spent as a member of Ms Brooke’s European specialist portfolio management team.
BGI appoints Tobin head of transitions
Barclays Global Investors (BGI) has hired Rory Tobin as director of transitions, Europe – a new position at the company.
Mr Tobin will be responsible for driving business strategy and market growth in Europe and Asia. He will report to Chris Sutton, head of global index and markets group, (GIMG) Europe.
Mr Sutton said: “BGI’s transitions business has grown rapidly over the last couple of years. Rory, with his tremendous depth of experience from the world of banking, will play a key role in driving the stra-tegic direction of the business.”
BBH names Dardonis senior vice-president
Brown Brothers Harriman (BBH) has recruited Joyce Dardonis as senior vice-president and head of securities lending sales for the Americas.
She joins BBH from State Street Corporation, where she served as vice-president and senior relationship manager for securities lending. Prior to this, she was vice-president and head of client service for Mellon Trust Boston’s non-profit client segment.
Financial practice expert joins Parson
Parson Consulting, an international financial management consultancy, has appointed Geoff Booth as financial services practice director for the UK.
He will be responsible for developing Parson Consult-ing’s financial services practice and, in particular, for advising senior finance executives on key internal controls and disclosure issues surrounding Sarbanes-Oxley, Basel II and IFRS.
Mr Booth was most recently the head of the UK Risk and Regulatory Practice at LogicaCMG. He is a chartered accountant and has more than 20 years’ experience within the financial services sector.
Permal picks Shaw for risk management
Permal Investment Manage-ment Services (PIMS) has appointed Julian Shaw as investment strategist and risk management director.
He will be reporting to Omar Kodmani, senior executive officer of PIMS.
Mr Shaw was previously at Barclays Capital, where he was global head of market risk and head of risk analytics and research.
